Description of Optional Services
Ultra Sonic (UT) Testing - provides measurement of Metal Thickness
The Ultra Sonic test is performed using a small handheld machine that
shoots an ultra sonic beam through the exterior paint and the underlying
metal. The beam reflects back from the interior side of the metal and
provides a readout in numerical form. The interior coating, if any, is
not measured. The exterior coating or paint, is measured. The inspector
must make an educated guess as to the ‘remaining’ thickness of the
metal. Therefore, one can presume with consistently low readings that
the tank has substantially deteriorated, through the formation of pits,
rust, scale, etc. Random low readings are not uncommon nor should be
cause for alarm.
Adhesion Testing - provides indication of quality of existing coating
The Cross Hatch test or Adhesion test if performed by physically cutting
into the existing coating to determine the percentage of material
(paint) that remains firmly in place on the metal structure. This will
allow an indication of life expectancy of the coating (paint).
Mil Thickness Testing - provides measurement of existing coating
Coatings (i.e. paint) are measured in units of ‘mils’ of DFT (dry film
thickness). For example, exterior enamel on steel structures applied by
the method of one coat of primer and 2 finish coats of enamel should
range approximately 6 to 8 mils DFT. The coating is measured after the
coating has had time to ‘cure’, usually 10 days of reasonably warm and
low humidity conditions. Five mils DFT, is recognized as the minimal
approved thickness of coatings on steel, to provide adequate protection
against deterioration.
