NFPA INSPECTION
Specifications For Professional Services
Water Tank NFPA Inspection
GENERAL:
We are a professional inspection firm. We will inspect, report and
recommend the elements required to bring your water storage tanks into
code compliance. The report will provide detailed photographs and cost
estimates on all recommended repairs.
STANDARDS:
The inspections, reports and recommendations will utilize the American
Water Works Association(AWWA) standards: AWWA D100, AWWA D102 and AWWA
C652-86 shall be used as the minimum criteria for evaluation of the
water storage tank. The coating systems will be evaluated in accordance
with the applicable criteria of the Steel Structures Painting
Council(SSPC) and the National Association of Corrosion Engineers(NACE).
Personnel access areas will be inspected and evaluated in accordance
with federal and Occupational Safety & Health Act regulations. Tanks
storing water specifically used for fire protection will be evaluated
under guidelines specified by the National Fire Protection
Association(NFPA).
PREPARATIONS:
A date shall be scheduled by the COORDINATOR for clean-out and inspection.
Excess water shall be disposed of in compliance with State and local
regulations. SUPERIOR TANK CO., INC. will clean the interior of each
tank, removing up to 3" of mud, silt, and foreign sediment before
inspection. Debris over 3" will be removed at an additional charge.
SUPERIOR TANK CO., INC. will also perform a “cross hatch” adhesion test
of ASTM D-3359. Dry film thickness measurements will be taken at random
locations, ultra-sonic readings will be recorded at random locations
where there is evidence of pitting or corrosion and on the tank bottom.
In addition to all of this, we will
perform wet-sponge testing to detect pinholes and holidays. On tanks
with flat bottoms, we perform vacuum testing to detect cracks or
compromises in the floor weld seams.
DOCUMENTATION:
The findings of the inspection shall be documented by field notes,
instrumentation readings and photographs. The final report will provide
the department personnel with a professional evaluation of the tank’s
structural integrity, sanitary integrity, personnel safety features and
the condition of the protective coating systems. A comprehensive report
shall be included on the structural and mechanical conditions of the
interior and exterior.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
The report shall include a proposal of recommended repairs required for
each water storage tank. This recommendation shall include material and
labor costs so that personnel can balance maintenance requirements with
budget constraints. Inspection elements of the water storage tank shall
be listed in sequence, how the problem should be corrected and the
urgency of the correction. The report shall list the elements requiring
immediate attention or short/long term planning.
